FAZEKAS, SZILARD ZSOLT
Two of the hottest fields in computer science research are bioinformatics and web searching related issues. I try to focus on questions in both of these domains. My main research interests include bioinformatics and biologically inspired string operations, automata theory and combinatorics on words. One of the topics I am working on at present is trying to find molecular graphs from incomplete descriptions obtained from existing chemical compounds. Another current interest involves modeling the biological notion of hairpin formation with string operations, the so called hairpin completions. I am also investigating a new compression method based on an algebraic structure which involves binary strings and concatenation and a complementation based product operation. I plan on turning more and more towards current trends in bioinformatics and string algorithmic research building on string combinatorics experience.

Continuous Mathematics

「連続系数学」グループでは, 連続に変化するものや現象の織りなす豊かな世界を研究対象にしています。ひとつは, 点の連続的なつながりである曲線, 曲面や, それらの高次元版である多様体の形や付加構造です(幾何学系の分野)。もうひとつは, 未知の形や構造を推定する方法や推定の可能性, を調べる逆問題です(解析系の分野)。 いずれの分野の対象も, 連続に動くたくさんの変数たちを使った式で表されます。

「逆問題」, 特に「未知の形を推定する逆問題」を数学的に研究しています。主な方法は解析的手法(特に積分)です。逆問題は, データから未知の何かを推定する問題なので, データサイエンスとも深い関係があります(データから AI (人工知能) を作るのも, 逆問題の一種です)。

全貌を直接捉えることの困難な多様体の形を,平面や2次元球面,射影平面などに写像(投影)した際に発生する輪郭線(特異値曲線)に基づいて推測する研究をしています。たとえ目に見える図形でも,形を正確に解析するのには工夫が要ります。視認困難な空間曲線の0-捩れ点や平面曲線の変曲点の位置と数を射影変換(全周投影)で探す等の応用研究もしています。

Theoretical physics

Physics covers many research subjects, including elementary particles and nuclei, a variety of materials composed of atoms and molecules, and the universe. The entire field of physics can be roughly categorized into theoretical physics and experimental physics. Students in our group learn how to describe mathematical models that extract and abstract the characteristics of actual physical systems and the phenomena they exhibit, as well as the mathematical and numerical methods for analyzing these models.

I am investigating the strange behavior of electrons and electromagnetic waves propagating in periodic structures from a geometric point of view. Quantum mechanical states can be represented as points in an abstract space called Hilbert space, and exciting aspects are how the geometrical features of the connections between these points manifest as physical phenomena.

I approach these through the fieldwork and the analysis of elemental concentration and isotopic ratios in minerals and rocks. Recently my research direction has been toward the application of isotopic systems to date the geological event and/or as a tracer of the evolution history of metals in crusts.
